Here in Virginia, we have JUST had our open captions law gone into effect this month! I hope you're celebrating by going to the movies! I haven't yet, but I really should... I'm thinking about seeing The Odyssey.
Open Captions... Who cares??? I feel like whenever I talk about Open Captions, no one cares.
Open Captions are subtitles shown on the big screen for all to see. The personal devices that hook into a cupholder or the glasses are difficult to say the least. Users report headaches, battery dying mid-movie, devices not provided upon request. In comparison, see the subtitles on-screen for everyone is a superior experience. The theaters can set it up easily, no physical discomfort involved. No one has to deal with batteries either.
To be honest, caption glasses, and personal caption devices are outdated technology. Not to mention expensive. Here's a link to a $600 SINGLE DEVICE that clips into the cupholder. Quick research shows caption glasses running for around the same price.
Open Captions is free for the movie theater and luckily the law was thought through very carefully to provide proper accessibility without it being too many obligatory viewings (that could cause them to lose customers).
What movie are you wanting to see this Summer? Do you want to go with me to the movies?
